A minimum of 13 people killed and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
