Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
